“What Can I Learn About Myself from Facebook?”

(From the blog series “Before I Post to Facebook”)

It is a mirror. It is an accurate reflection. If you step back and consider your Facebook, you will learn a great deal about yourself.

Ask yourself: “What themes run through my posts? How do I view my friend count? What is my mind absorbing as I read the feeds allowed on my page? With what frequency am I on Facebook?”

Do you like what you see? That’s good! Does your Lord Jesus Christ like what He sees? It’s ok if you need to make some changes. It is not ok if you know you need change and do nothing.

We can bring various Scriptures to bear on the matter. For a  believer, a few diagnostic questions might be …

  • How is my mind renewed through Facebook? (Rom 12:2)
  • In what ways does Facebook help me make the most of my time? (Eph 5:16)
  • What worthless things are set before my eyes? (Ps 101:3)
  • What are some ways I use Facebook for the glory of God? (1 Cor 10:31)

There are many more to list, but this small sample should suffice. Remember, believer, you were bought with a price (1 Cor 6:20). You are no longer your own.  It is possible to use Facebook to draw attention to yourself, promote yourself, and dump gas on the self-esteem fire. But, Christians don’t do that anymore. They’ve been purchased for purer purposes. By God’s grace, we are called to a higher, nobler purpose!

God takes all this very seriously. Salvation is expensive to Him. Self-evaluation is important for genuine believers (2 Cor 13:5). I trust this week’s series on Facebook has been helpful and challenging. I pray it places Jesus Christ at the center of your Facebook. My hope is that we redeem even social media for the glory of our great God!

“I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me” (Gal 2:20)
