What is Expository Preaching?

“Expository Sermons are the ‘Crown Jewels’ of the Preaching Ministry, unfolding, explaining, applying a passage of Scripture,” writes Mark Hollingsworth of preachology.com.

Expository preaching is derived from a biblical text that explains, illustrates, and applies Scripture to human lives. Prepared in prayer, this sermon finds its sole source in the Scriptures. Historical, literary, and grammatical factors are considered and the original languages are studied so that the original meaning can be understood. The author’s intended meaning to his original audience is the God-inspired meaning of the sermon. Expository preaching exposes or lays open this essential meaning. The enduring principles may be illustrated and should always be applied. The sermon is aimed at the transformation of the hearer and applied to his/her present-day needs. The delivery is engaging, compelling, and persuasive. The process, from start to finish, is to be conducted by a man in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Here at FBW, we believe Expository Preaching is the best way to proclaim God’s Word. It is the only right response to God’s Word, since all of them are inspired by Him! (2 Tim 3:16) Expository Preaching puts the Bible on display as we live to put Jesus Christ on display!
